Simulation of a Code Red (cardiac arrest resuscitation effort) in the back
of an ambulance (April 1997). EMT Shamera Boone is performing chest compressions. EMT Ryan
Mclane is providing artificial respirations with a bag-valve-mask device. By coordinating
their efforts, Boone and Mclane are performing CPR. Paramedic Dan Moore (left) is making a
report on the MED/COR radio to the medical control physician at the hospital. A fourth
technician (EMT Judy Paulsen) is partially visible (top right) as she adjusts the IV for
proper administration of fluid and medication. The patient is also attached to a cardiac
monitor-defibrillator. Even in the field, modern EMS providers can give this patient
virtually all of the treatments that he or she would initially receive at the hospital
emergency room. The "patient" in this simulation is actually a CPR training
manakin.
