HAZMAT CALAMITY:  Or maybe just a waste disposal guy who climbed into an underground tank of restaurant dish water to get a tool he'd dropped, but then found that he couldn't climb out.  KVRS members suited up just in case while VBFD took technical measures.  The worker suffered a bit of cold exposure, but no serious injury.

OVERTURNED SCHOOL BUS:  A fully-loaded school bus carrying middle-schoolers drifted onto the right shoulder, over-corrected, and overturned, injuring several students.  KVRS paramedics Ed Brazle, Dan Love, Chris Born, and Kathy Budy established incident command and sector positions early in the incident.  These pictures show the cooperative efforts of rescue squad and fire personnel early in the incident.  The incident sparked debate about seat belts on school buses.

ONE IN A MILLION:  A pickup truck carrying three teens failed to negotiate a bend and overturned in a residential neighborhood.  The teens were on their way back to a party after a beer-run in the wee hours of the morning.  They were all unrestrained.  A female passenger suffered a broken arm, ran from the scene, but later called police.  A male passenger was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled, and slid head-first up to his shoulders directly into a curbside storm drain.  Subsequent rapid swelling of the soft tissue of his head and face resulted in his head being entrapped in the drain casing.  He later died.  The driver escaped injury, ran from the scene, and was later charged with manslaughter.

FAMILY FUN DAY, FIREWORKS SHOW:  Tens of thousands of people stream into Mt. Trashmore Park each Independence Day to picnic, listen to live bands, patronize the vendors, ride carnival rides, and finally to watch the fireworks show.  KVRS coordinates EMS coverage at the park all day and into the night.  We hold a cookout for our members and their families on one side of our tent.  On the other side, we run an ALS first aid station.  Our sister squads post additional units at strategic points around the mountain; the Virginia Beach EMS Volunteer Bike Team runs patrols; and Medical Transport Inc. loans us its ALS golf cart ambulance.  KVRS applies Incident Command System and Mass Casualty Incident Managament techniques throughout.  This year, a temperature index of about 110 degrees kept much of the public home.  Those who did attend, including us, took the heat seriously.  We treated a handful of people for various minor maladies, but transported no one.  Meanwhile, KVRS Life Member Mel Losick had an easy, air-conditioned shift as EMS-5 (city duty chief), neatly insulated from the action at Mt. Trashmore.
