Not suprisingly, this section has proven to be the most challenging part of this series to write. [In fact, this page is nowhere near complete. --KAL] The Kempsville Volunteer Rescue Squad currently defines itself as an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) agency. KVRS, and any other agency like it, is just one of several stakeholders in the field of EMS. One book in our library (see recommended reading) has this to say about the future of volunteer EMS organizations:
Finally, the EMS dragon is so complex that the beginning of the conflict among the contending parties, let alone the end of the conflict, is unclear. [Perkins & Benoit, 1996]
Although, by virtue, we prefer to characterize our environment as a set of opportunities for innovation and cooperation rather than for conflict, we cannot escape the fact that EMS is still in a relative state of infancy (as compared to its parent disciplines of medicine, firefighting, etc), and that some facets of its nature are not well-defined.
